First: Is This Actually a Problem? Not all leaf loss is trouble. Ask three questions: Which leaves? The oldest one or two at the very bottom, occasionally, is normal aging. Leaves from the middle or top, or several at once, is not. How fast? One leaf a month on a mature plant is fine. Three or more in a week signals a problem. What did they look like? Fully yellow and soft points to watering or root problems. Green and firm points to shock, draft, or a temperature swing. Write down what changed in the last three weeks — the plant moved, the pot changed, the heating came on, the clocks changed, you went on holiday. Overwatering (most common by a wide margin) Ficus elastica evolved with a dry season and stores water in thick, waxy leaves. Kept constantly wet, its roots lose oxygen, begin to rot, and can no longer supply the canopy — so the plant sheds leaves from the bottom up. Cold air from a winter window, an exterior door, or an AC vent can strip several leaves in days — often green ones that simply let go. Autumn leaf drop is very frequently a draft problem misdiagnosed as a watering problem. Fix: Move the plant at least three feet from glass, doors and vents. Keep night temperatures above 60°F. Cheap dense potting soil in a pot with no drainage hole does the same thing faster. Fix: Repot in spring into a chunky mix — two parts quality potting mix, one part perlite or pumice, one part bark. What Makes a Rex Begonia Different Begonias are divided into groups by growth habit, and that grouping tells you almost everything about care. Rex begonias are rhizomatous: they grow from a thick, knuckly, horizontal stem that creeps along the soil surface rather than from an upright cane or a fibrous crown. Leaves and roots both emerge from that rhizome. Three practical consequences follow from that anatomy: They need wide, shallow pots. The rhizome spreads sideways. A deep pot holds a column of wet soil the roots never reach, and that is the single most common cause of rot. The rhizome must stay at the surface. Burying it invites rot.
