How to Identify an Aloe: The Fast Key Before you compare species, confirm you are holding an aloe at all. Aloes share four traits: Thick, fleshy, water-filled leaves arranged in a rosette, with clear gel inside when cut. Soft teeth or spines along the leaf margins — usually flexible, not woody. Tubular flowers on a tall unbranched or lightly branched stalk, typically orange, red, coral, or yellow. Shallow, fibrous root systems and a tendency to produce offsets ("pups") at the base.
