That is a shame, because the genus Aloe contains more than 600 accepted species — tree-sized giants, spiral-leaved architectural oddities, white-speckled miniatures small enough for a teacup, and coral-flowered garden plants that hummingbirds fight over. True aloe vera is one species, but the wider aloe family includes over 500. The most common in cultivation are aloe vera, aristata, brevifolia, juvenna, polyphylla, plicatilis, ferox, variegata and nobilis. They vary in leaf markings, spination, size and whether they form tight rosettes or trunks. How do I identify an aloe species? Check four features: leaf shape and thickness, edge spines, surface markings and growth habit. Aloe vera has plain grey green leaves with pale teeth. Those enormous violin-shaped leaves look architectural and expensive, which is exactly why people buy them, and its reputation for being dramatic is exactly why people fear them. Here is the truth after growing hundreds of them: the fiddle leaf fig is not a difficult plant. It is a consistent plant. It wants the same light, the same water rhythm, and the same spot in your home every week of the year. Almost every fiddle leaf fig problem you will read about online traces back to one of three things: not enough light, inconsistent watering, or being moved around. Fix those and this plant will grow a foot a year and outlive your furniture.
